Is it just me or did summer start later this year?

Is it just me or did summer take a while to get going this year? I’m sure part of it is that I’m no longer living near the beach. If you’d have asked me over the last four years, “when does summer begin for you?” I would have said that it starts when we have our first beach day. That was usually in May after an excited and chilly beach day attempt in late March or Mid-April. This year, I’m embracing what feels like a later start to summer and finally diving in to all of the delicious summer produce to be found at farm stands and farmer’s markets.

Nashville had an unusually long spring this year, and is absolutely making up for it with a couple of back-to-back scorching hot weeks. I’m dealing with the heat by employing a healthy balance of indoor time and embracing the warm wet blanket of the outdoors. There’s something a little bit freeing about knowing that a sweat-stache is coming for you and there’s nothing you can do about it. See below:

speak up if you are also a victim of your iphone’s front camera!!!!!!

I also wanted to thank everyone who reached out and showed support for Craveable after I returned last week with renewed excitement and commitment to writing more (and with my grubby palm extended letting you all know that portions of my newsletters will be for paid subscribers only going forward ❤️).

I still want Craveable to feel exciting and informative and fun to read for those of you who choose not to pay to subscribe. I’d love to know what you’d like to see more of! This week I’m going to share a little roundup of some things I’ve been up to.

Pictured here we have some highlights of my week since we last spoke:

  1. making peach jam

  2. celebrating 10 years of lake trips with some of my dearest friends

  3. drinking a peach iced coffee

  4. making a very messy very crunchy lettuce club which is really just three pieces of lettuce layered with meat and cheese

  5. some thrift store finds to include a stunning corn candle

  6. a cocktail that I enjoyed at The Patterson House which recently moved over into the Gulch

  7. a new facemask that I’m pretty sure I look just like Hailey Bieber in

  8. a tasty little Sicilian skin contact wine by the producer COS

  9. annnnd finally, a facebook marketplace find mirror that we’re figuring out how to style in our home (but how cute!)

Before we get to this week’s recipe, I want to point you in the direction of my new favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe. First, I have to remind you all that I have a chocolate chip cookie recipe which you can find here. However, this one that I’m about to share blows it out of the water and is much simpler to make in my humble opinion.

A recent favorite TikTok follow of mine is M Kathleen Meisinger whose account is called The Practice of Pastry. She takes an extremely scientific approach when it comes to baking and tests recipes as though she’s working in a lab. If you want to get better at baking or better understand why recipes behave the way they do, I highly recommend following her. Here is the link to the cookie recipe that I snagged from her linktree. These cookies are chewy in the middle with the best crispy edges. They’re perfectly salty and get nicely caramelized in the oven due to the slightly lower baking temp. I don’t even have any photos of the ones I baked because they were all immediately eaten by friends and family. 100/10 recommend.

Now for my recipe! This week we’re making granola! Or, actually, I set out to make granola inspired by one of my favorite summer flavor combinations: corn + blueberry. I thought it’d be a little cheeky and add some extra fun flavor by throwing cornflakes into my granola. What I realized this morning is that I’ve really just made homemade Honey Bunches of Oats cereal. Which is actually great, because it’s my favorite cereal of all time. This granola/cereal is amazing on yogurt, in a bowl of milk, or enjoyed by the handful. It’s also extremely easy to throw together and the majority of time spent making it is just waiting on it to bake.
